Design of a vacuum chamber for leak testing of serum bottles
Introduction
In this project, we undertook the complete design of an industrial vacuum chamber intended for leak testing of serum bottles, ensuring product integrity in a demanding production environment.
The project challenge
The client, in the healthcare sector, needed a system capable of verifying the leak-tightness of their serum bottles using vacuum. The main challenge was that the starting point was very limited: only the dimensions of the trolleys that had to be introduced into the chamber and the maximum available space for the installation of the system were available.
Based on this information, BOMEN took on the comprehensive development of the project, from the conceptual definition to the final design ready for manufacturing.
System definition and development of the P&ID
The first step was the creation of the P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram), where the complete operation of the system was defined: vacuum generation, control, instrumentation and safety elements.
This document made it possible to validate the operational logic of the system with the client from an early stage, ensuring that all technical and functional requirements were correctly defined before moving on to the mechanical design.
Design of the vacuum chamber and structural calculations (FEA)
Once the system was validated, we proceeded with the design of the vacuum chamber, taking into account the critical working conditions arising from the vacuum.
To ensure safety and correct structural behaviour, we carried out mechanical calculations using FEA (Finite Element Analysis), simulating the real operating loads. This made it possible to validate the strength of the structure, minimise deformations and ensure the reliability of the equipment under industrial use conditions.
3D modelling and integration of the system on site
In parallel, a complete 3D model of the system was developed, including both the chamber and all the auxiliary elements necessary for its operation.
This work made it possible to carry out an optimisation of the available space, ensuring that the system fit perfectly on site and facilitating the subsequent manufacturing and installation phase.
Optimisation of the closing system
During development, the need to improve the chamber’s closing system was identified to ensure both leak-tightness and ease of use.
We designed specific hinges and closing mechanisms, optimised to withstand vacuum conditions and improve user operation, ensuring an efficient, safe and repeatable closure.
Final result of the project
The result was an industrial vacuum chamber fully designed and ready for manufacturing, adapted 100% to the client’s needs and the limitations of their production environment.
